Happy 50th Birthday to ‘The Outsider’!
Colin Wilson’s masterwork was first published by Victor Gollancz in May 1956. To mark its 50th anniversary, Geoff Ward has contributed a personal tribute in this month’s Friends of T.C. Lethbridge posting.
A Mind Bridge to the Ancient – Four, Inter-relating lectures
"During July/August 2006, the writer and poet Terry Welbourn (aka welbourn TEKH) will be presenting a series of four, one hour, essays at the Bare Pots Studio at The Lawn, Lincoln."
1. T.C. Lethbridge - The Man Who Saw the Future – July 13th 2006 7.15pm start
A story of a Cambridge graduate who became one of the greatest, but overlooked minds of the 20th century. His life included Arctic adventures with Sir James Wordie through to profound archaeological discoveries in the Fens. However, his main claim to fame was his discovery of a goddess figure cut into the turf on a Cambridgeshire hillside and his experiments with dowsing and ESP during the final decade of his life.
2. The Goddess and the Grail – July 27th 2006 7.15pm start
Many prehistoric cultures were matrilineal and as a consequence of this, the adoration of a goddess was paramount. The lecture provides examples of how the Great Goddess was patronised in Britain, from the Stone Age through to the present day.
3. Neolithic To Nike - the story of the logo – August 3rd 2006 7.15pm start
The logo is a complex entity that has been utilised throughout history to convey and communicate complex messages. The lecture provides an anatomy of its roots and its ability to transcend its two-dimensional form.
4. Stone Circles of the British Isles – August 17th 2006 7.15pm start
A personal perspective of the megalithic culture of the Neolithic and Bronze Age, providing an explanation as to why ancient man was obsessed with erecting standing stones. The lecture also analyses the anatomy of the stone circle and provides explanations as to their odd shapes and an insight into their positioning within the landscape.
Tickets for each lecture are £5.00 each and bookings can be made at Bare Pots, 3-5 Ingleman’s Place, The Lawn, Union Road, Lincoln LN1 3BU Telephone: 01522 546969.
Sea Room
I have recently been reading Adam Nicolson’s ‘Sea Room’: “20 years ago it happened to Adam Nicolson. Aged 21, he inherited the Shiants, 3 lonely islands set in dangerous sea 5 miles off Lewis; only a stone bothy for accommodation – and one of the most beautiful places on the planet. A world of hermits, of birds and boats, of fishermen and sheep, ‘Sea Room’ is these islands’ story, written with passion and poetry – a celebration for all of us of an island life”
The Shiant Islands (pronounced ‘Shant’, as in ‘Shanty’) were familiar to T.C. Lethbridge. In Merlin’s Island, he makes reference to a wreck he discovered on the island and in Ghost and Ghoul, he recounts an odd occurrence concerning a vanishing coat and lunchbox during his visit there with his friend 'Whiskers' Bristowe in July 1922. Lethbridge would have delighted in Nicolson’s poetic study and, if he were alive today, would surely have added his own recollections of the lonely Islands of the Sith.
TEMPLAR brighton
simon TEMPLAR’s In Search of the Knights Templar - published by Weidenfeld and Nicholson is now available.
For 200 years the Knights Templar held sway over an area ranging from Britain to Jerusalem—until their influence began to threaten France’s Phillip IV and the papacy itself. Destroyed by Phillip in 1314, the order disappeared into history, but they left a rich and varied legacy throughout the British Isles, from London’s Temple Church and the Great Wilbraham Perceptory to Lundy Island. More than 180 color and black and white photographs help tell the story of every significant British site of Templar activity, backed by authoritative text that reveals the history and notable architectural details of each. Addresses, directions, and even visiting hours for official or protected sites are also provided.
