TEKH’s Journal
Whilst recently plough through some correspondence between T.C. Lethbridge and his friend Sir Cyril Fox, I happened upon an intriguing letter written on 3rd March 1925. Lethbridge informed his friend that his recently acquired house The Lodge in Waterbeach was on the site of a Toot Hill. The subject got me thinking about my experiences with so-called Norman mounds that appear to have more ancient origins. These include, Maiden Bower and Cock Lodge a motte and bailey moated site in the parish of Topcliffe in the Hambleton district of North Yorkshire(1), the tantalising Norman motte at the Scottish Border town of Hawick and even the enormous mound within the walls of Lincoln Castle near to my home.
The necessity to pin labels and definitions upon particular sites, inhibits our ability to perceive their stages of evolution. It is logical that Norman invaders would choose to utilise ready-made mounds and earthworks for their own secular agendas. During the course of his fenland investigations, T.C. Lethbridge once observed that Norman sites often referred to as ‘Manors’, where often situated on top of earlier Anglo=Saxon middens. This discovery exemplifies the evolution and continuity that has occurred on a given site.

Mount Blow
Anyone interested in buying a former home of T.C. Lethbridge need look no further.... The property, four miles south of Cambridge and overlooking the Gogmagog hills was built and named Mount Blow by Lethbridge in 1938. It has since changed its name to South Hill House and is currently on the market with the intuitively named estate agents Bidwells. However, don't get too excited, unless you have £2,000,000 to spare!!!!
Right, I'm off to count the 5p pieces in my 'Jumbo' piggybank....
