Baby Boom-arang!

Before I begin this month’s posting, congratulations must go out to our esteemed cohort Kevlar and his wife Gill who, last week gave birth to a baby boy, who is to be known to the world as Leon.

In my July entry for Tekh’s Journal, I posted an essay on T.C. Lethbridge at Shudy Camps in Cambridgeshire. I mentioned in my posting, that writing the essay had inspired me to take a trip down to Shudy Camps to get an impression of the countryside, frequented by Lethbridge during his endeavours. On Sunday 5 September 2004, I took a drive down to Cambridgeshire and met up with TEMPLAR brighton and Jonathan Rhys-Lewis at Wandlebury. As you may recall from a previous posting, Johnny has been undertaking some research on the Lethbridge family and it was finally good to have an opportunity to actually meet up with him. On a totally magnificent day, we took a stroll out along the course of the Roman Road to visit the tumulus on nearby Copley Hill, before driving down to Shudy Camps to observe the hillside upon which Lethbridge excavated the Anglo-Saxon cemetery in 1936. It is indeed a strange ‘corner’ of Britain and one can understand how Lethbridge became inspired by the curious legends and place names of the area. As well as the Gog Magog Hills, names such as Belsar’s Hill, Horningsea and Wendens Ambo are all names crying out to be investigated.

This month’s posting in 'Tekh’s Journal' is an essay entitled ‘T.C. Lethbridge, A Broken Spectre and The Rock of Angels’. The essay was inspired by Lethbridge’s encounter with a Broken Spectre phenomenon whilst exploring the island of Jan Mayen with his friend James Wordie in 1921. Check it out.

On Saturday 11 September I joined Julian Cope on stage at the Cambridge Arts Centre to contribute spoken word to the track ‘T.C.L.E.T.H.B.R.I.D.G.E’/’Dance by the light of the bridges you burn’. I had a great evening and it was fantastic to eventually put faces to the names of some of the people who I have corresponded with via this site. It is my intention to attend and appear with Julian at one or two more of the venues on his current tour. Julian’s set was superb and featured a range of material from ‘World Shut Your Mouth’ through to his forthcoming album ‘Citizen Cained’.

The Colchester gig gave me my first opportunity to catch up with Doggen’s band DOGNTANK, featuring the man himself on guitar, Antronhy on drums and Charlie Wayman on Bass. They were of course superb and if you like your rock fast, loud and heavy, then get yourself down to one of the venues on the tour. The band have pressed up a limited edition 3 track single which will be available at the gigs, but will soon be available on this site priced at £4.00 inc. P&P. I’ll post the info up when it becomes available.

Over the last few weeks I have been ploughing my way through Colin Wilson’s extraordinary autobiography ‘Dreaming To Some Purpose’ – published by Century back in June. The book gives a fascinating glimpse into Colin’s life and provides the reader with an insight into Colin’s philosophies and recounts his early years as a struggling author through to his notoriety as an ‘Angry Young Man’ as a result of the publishing of ‘The Outsider’ in 1956. I have also managed to obtain a copy of ‘A Book of Islands’ by W. S. Bristowe, a book recommended to me last month by a visitor to this site - Daniel Martin. As I mentioned in last month’s posting, Bristowe describes his travels to numerous islands, including ones in the northern oceans where he was accompanied by T.C. Lethbridge. There appear to be several, reasonably priced copies available on abebooks.com, it is definitely worth checking out for the Lethbridge connection alone. It is my intention to post an essay on this site regarding Lethbridge’s adventures with Bristowe at a future date.

I have also included links to my continuing UNSUNG essays to my profile section elsewhere on this site. It is my intention to extend this feature every month and encourage other members of this collective to do like-wise. My latest posting is a review of The Comsat Angels LP ‘Waiting For A Miracle’
