From Dublin to Elsinore in a Sailing Ship

Self-published, 1934

From Dublin to Elsinore in a Sailing Ship was one of a series of privately published books that Lethbridge produced during the 1930s. The publications were quite exclusive and were intended as Christmas gifts to his friends and colleagues. Lethbridge saw this annual undertaking as an opportunity to document and portray his love of the sea. Each publication contained his own sketches depicting maritime scenes and illustrations of sailing vessels he had encountered upon his travels. In the autumn of 1934 he produced From Dublin to Elsinore in a Sailing Ship a slender volume that documented his previous summer’s voyage from Dublin to Elsinore (Denmark) on board the Passat - a four-masted barque. The journey took the party south along the Welsh coast and then west through the English Channel, before eventually crossing the North Sea north of Yarmouth. His attention to detail is exquisite as he describes the changing weather, the landmarks around Britain including the winking light off Lizard Point and the numerous ships they encountered on their journey.

The tome contains five pages of text and five dedicated to Lethbridge’s illustrations relating to the voyage:

Plate #1: On the lower topgallant yard
Plate #2: Greasing the sheaves
Plate #3: Clare, Killoray and a schooner
Plate #4: Parmma in the Bristol Channel
Plate #5: Clare and Passat at Elsinore
